2011 Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala

The 2011 Met Costume Gala honored late designer Alexander McQueen with exhibition entirely dedicated to his legacy and iconic work, 'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty' exhibit.

Beyonce is killing it in this mermaid-cut, collared Emilio Pucci gown with tulle skirt, gold embroidery and cleavage cutout. The dress is so fitted that it looks like it made walking, sitting, breathing and all of life's other basic functions impossible.

Gisele Bundchen stuns in strapless, fire-engine red archive Alexander McQueen gown with a dramatic train, which she pairs with glittering Van Cleef & Arpels earrings and retro waves.

Naomi Watts is lovely in a nude embroidered Stella McCartney gown with rose gold belt and a metallic Sergio Rossi clutch.

Eva Mendes rocks a deep blue, pleated silk Stella McCartney gown with a thick gold belt, both the color and the era of the season in a 70's inspired cerulean pleated gown. The vibrant dress was belted with gold and worn with a low updo and minimal makeup.

Gwyneth Paltrow brings plenty of her own sparkle to the red carpet, she also shows off her famously fit figure in a crystal-embellished, long sleeve Stella McCartney nude gown and  champagne Christian Louboutin pumps.

Jennifer Lopez lives it up in a fuchsia peek-a-boo Gucci gown with floral bolero and pink clutch. The fall-theme foliage exploded to take over her shoulders.

Talk about stealing the show! Perhaps taking a cue from Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci goes goth in a spiderwebby lace Zac Posen gown with full trumpet skirt. She completes the dark glamour with Fred Leighton ruby-and-diamond earring. So over top, it's too hard not to love.

Kristen Stewart in a Proenza Schouler dress, a black clutch and strappy heels. Or at the very least something showing off her thigh-high slit. Otherwise there's not a whole lot of shape to this heavily-patterned frock. It's not awful, but it overwhelms the normally 'Twilight' star. Never thought this would be said, but bring back the glam-rock minis, please?!

Madonna is styled like a wartime victory pinup girl. Whether or not she's making a political statement, there's something amazingly patriotic about the singer's slinky, star-spangled Stella McCartney gown with sequined clutch, loose curls and red lipstick.

Claire Danes is radiant in a shimmering gold V-neck Calvin Klein Collection gown, which she accents with Fred Leighton jewels. The gown that fits her signature minimalist style.

Jennifer Hudson is a gray lady in her pleated organza Vera Wang gown with tulle rosettes, accented with vintage diamond Fred Leighton sparklers. Not an overall bad look but feels like something is missing.

Alicia Keys looks sweet in a head-to-toe chocolate-colored ensemble, from her Givenchy Haute Couture gown accented by a crocodile jacket and matching crocodile clutch. The leather jacket looks more suited for a less glitzy red carpet, and why such a dull tone?  This brown hue does nothing to uplift Keys’s natural beauty.

Fergie's busty bridal dress knockoff by Marchesa may have been a left over from the royal wedding. The mermaid silhouette, the layers of white lace and tulle, the diamond tiara—she's already got her vow renewal outfit all figured out.

Dianna Agron opted for a graphic red gown sans crazy bells and whistles at the 2011 Met Gala. The clean silhoutte and Y-shaped neck accentutated her lean frame, while a single statement-making cuff bracelet added the need punch.

The fashion darling, Diane Kruger steps out in a slim-fitting, slit-to-there Jason Wu number with a floral embellished top that required 500 hours of hand embroidery and went for retro glamour with side-parted waves and a bold red lip.  The blonde bombshell finished off her look with a hard case clutch and crimson coated nails.

The 'Parenthood' star, Joy Bryant shines in spring's bright colors, wearing a pink-and-orange, striped knit Missoni sweater and sweeping skirt with an elegant updo and chandeliers.

Salma Hayek shows off her famous curves in a peach organza Alexander McQueen couture shoulder goddess gown with a rosette at the waist and back-swept wild curls.

Amy Poehler was all decked out for the Met Gala in a draped navy chiffon evening gown. The funny gal wore her bright blonde locks in a voluminous updo and accessorized with all gold. A stunning statement necklace made this look notable.

Never one to shy away from a red-carpet moment, Lea Michele steals the show in a custom red silk faille Escada gown and geode-and-diamond Kimberly McDonald drop earrings.

Taylor Swift vamped up the Met red carpet in a frothy nude and black J. Mendel Couture gown. The country songstress played up her fair complexion by wearing a tonal organza design with a layered train and puckered up in a deep red pout. Taylor's famous curls were swept back for this elegant Old Hollywood look

Sarah Jessica Parker, style icon and longtime friend of Alexander McQueen – pays tribute to the designer in a high-necked, glittering Alexander McQueen gown.  SJP's fully beaded champagne gown had a slim silhouette, draped high neck and chic three-quarter sleeves; she topped the look with a retro chignon. She doesn't need to show skin to look sexy.

Michelle Williams takes flight in a swallow-embellished, custom Miu Miu gown with grosgrain bow details, plus subtly glamorous vintage Fred Leighton jewels.

Kate Hudson experienced the ultimate wardrobe washout in Stella McCartney, making matters worse with her way too beachy hairdo. The small tiara isn't helping matters either, makes it look like a bird had an accident and landed on her head.

Mary-Kate Olsen's oversized vintage Givenchy potato sack is just the same old, same old for this boho-obsessed babe. Too covered and too big.

Liv Tyler joins the fashion flock in a white-and-yellow ombré Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gown, which she accents with a yellow satin clutch. The hair and makeup a little to simplistic for such a red carpet event.

Penelope Cruz hits the red carpet, looking sweet and sexy in a black ruffled Oscar de la Renta gown with mermaid skirt and feather-embellished bag, accented with 93 carats of Chopard diamonds and Jimmy Choo heels.

Ginnifer Goodwin makes the other guests green with envy! With its high slit and side cutouts, the emerald gown shows just the right amount of skin -- and the actress' contrasting, purple platforms serve as the perfect modern accent.

Ashley Greene certainly knew how to make an appearance at the Met Gala in a one-of-a-kind Donna Karan design. The voluminous strapless tulle confection was adorned with stripes of silver sequins and created a sumptuous whipped train to follow behind her.

Kerry Washington is sexy in her seafoam Escada gown with side cut-outs, the star tempers the racy look with retro-chic curls, H. Stern rock crystal earrings and a tiny Swarovski box clutch.

Spring is in bloom for the 'Modern Family' star, Sophia Vergara who wears a playful Carolina Herrera strapless blossom print faille gown with olive waistband and Harry Winston sparklers.  But just not quite sure about the long-stemmed flowers, which look like they were taped onto the dress as an afterthought.

Blake Lively is seriously working this Chanel number as much as she can. It's kind of cool in a high-fashion way, and  that Karl Lagerfeld was her date, but it also looks like she about to appear on 'Dancing with the Stars'.

It's go big or go home for the stunning supermodel Iman, who commands the red carpet in a bronze and gold embroidered long sleeve Stella McCartney jumpsuit and Fred Leighton jewels. The young bucks could learn a thing or two from this fashion legend.

Oh, where to begin. It's nice to see Serena Williams in a dress that isn't so tight that she can't breathe, but this feathered, bridal confection is just too much for the tennis champ. Also the fascinator that appears to have been a reject from the royal wedding.

Leighton Meester clearly knows how to get people to Gossip about her. The star flunked with her fashion and her beauty, looking way to S&M for the swanky soiree.

Jessica Alba is just one of the prettiest stars to walk the red carpet with a baby on board. Her strapless Ralph Lauren gown with delicate beading and layers of champagne-colored tulle is dreamy and the gold clutch and jewel-encrusted headband just pull it all together.

Fashion veteran Naomi Campbell, paid tribute by wearing a dress by Alexander
McQueen.
But the overly ornate fringed design didn't do her supermodel figure justice. She might have pulled off it weren't for the Junior Prom updo with white flowers

As if the dress wasn't bad or bold enough, Solange Knowles sported an awful 'do DON'T!

Dakota Fanning poses in posies, wearing her floral-appliqué tulle Valentino gown with minimal accessories. The young actress played up her youth in this strapless tulle confection, adorned with a cheerful spattering of appliqued flowers.

Seinfeld may not have appreciated the pirate shirt making an apperance that Ashley Olsen is rocking at the Met Gala. This vintage Christian Dior gown is bold and completely unexpected.

Leave it to fierce fashionista Rihanna to do something off the wall like wear a gown that has a train in the front, in this single-sleeve lace Stella McCartney gown. From the lackluster train to the sad side braid and clashing makeup and earrings, Ri-Ri just isn't as fun and whimsical as she normally is with her fashion.
